Horn of Africa Disaster Response 08/11-01/12

Kenya’s drought has been declared a national disaster.

Ten million livestock have died, crops have failed and its now 35 kms or more to the nearest water for people in the worst affected counties. Water sources remain unprotected and easily contaminated.

Japan Disaster Response: Update No 2

Today was the first day of operations of our team and we chose to travel to the town of Tagajo, which has been severely affected by both earthquake and tsunami.
The manager of the town’s social service department Kenta Tesaki remembered us from our previous assessment visit last week and he was happy to register us to work in coordination with the governmental relief plan.
We expressed to him our wish to assist the elderly in cleaning up their homes so that they could move back and regain at least some measure of normality in their lives that have been so heavily shaken in the past two weeks.
While waiting for the assignment, we enjoyed the company of many youth who were also volunteering to help cleaning up the town. They were excited to see us there and, winning their hesitation to express themselves in English, they told us how thankful they were for our gesture of real solidarity.
Eventually we got assigned three homes that matched our requirements and the government staff brought us there and introduced us to Ineko Saitou, aged 73, who was battling with her flooded home. She was alone because her husband was sick and remained at the refugee center and after a few moments of expected hesitation from seeing so many foreigners in bright uniforms in her house, she became our obasan, or grandmother, smiling and feeling again optimistic about life.

Japan Disaster Response: Update No 1

Our AMURT and AMURTEL teams have finally arrived at Sendai and found accommodation at a youth hostel that besides being economical also affords us the possibility to cook our own food and do collective meditation.

The situation in downtown Sendai appears quite normal, but there are still long queues at gas stations and supermarkets, signs that normal distribution channels are only partially reactivated.

Only few hotels are open and they are fully booked by rescue teams, media from around the world and local people who lost their homes to the Tsunami.

Today we visited one of the many Volunteers centers that are directly run by the local government.

We got a map and list of the 50 refugee centers in Sendai and we could manage to visit one of the largest camps with about 700 to 800 refugees. We had the chance to spend some time with the children and the elderly. Everything seems orderly and all the refugees’ basic necessities are provided.

Tomorrow we will try to register in Tagajo city hall and start our elderly support program in that area, which was in part destroyed by the tsunami.

A new volunteer has joined us from today, Sabine who flew in from Scotland. She isn’t new to Japan as she spent three years here and she really wanted to return the kindness and hospitality she received in the past by the Japanese people.

Japan Disaster Response 03/11

Namaskar,

AMURT ist jetzt dabei, eine große Hilfsaktion im Nordosten Japans zu starten. Hier die Protokolle der letzten Tage:

18.03.:
The government in the Sendai welcome the offer from AMURT to begin relief work and appreciate the experience that they bring from other disasters in Haiti and Indonesia etc. However they are unable to provide any accommodation, food or fuel for our relief workers.

Our AMURT teams in Japan are dedicated and committed to providing whatever services they can to the refugees lacking basic human needs.

17.03.:
Our AMURT Team in Japan are still waiting for permission from the local government in Sendai to begin relief work. They are unable to make contact with officials in Sendai and are using the time to collect relief materials etc. and prepare for the work ahead. We hope to be there within 24-48 hours. We will post photos of relief work as soon as we receive them.

16.03.:
Right now our team is in Nagano collecting equipment and supplies and arranging vehicles etc. There are no hotels open in or near Sendai. They had to sleep in a car while they were there. They are hoping that they will be provided with a school classroom for accommodation etc. There is also no public transport from Tokyo to Sendai, whilst the radiation threat continues. Fuel, food and electricity are all in short supply and being rationed.

UN Secretary General visits AMURT Camp in Haiti

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-Moon, made a one day trip to visit earthquake affected Haiti. Since the January 12 earthquake, the Petionville Country Club has been transformed into one of the largest camps for displaced people in Port-au-Prince, with estimates of up to 70,000 people living there. AMURT has opened 3 Child-Friendly Spaces in the camp, serving approximately 460 children so far, and projected to serve up to 1000 within two weeks.  As Ban toured through the camp, he visited one of our Child-Friendly Spaces scheduled to open the following day. Sara Wolf (Sarita),  the AMURT Child Protection Coordinator,  explained the educational importance of providing safe opportunities for play and self-expression for young children. She  described our program which offers story-telling, art, music, karate and yoga as well as meals and nutritional support to children 4-12 years old. He enquired if the children are going to school, and she explained that  as schools still closed, AMURT is providing  this transitional program of 3 hours a day. He was very impressed to see how happy the children look.

Here you can see UN Secretary General Ban meeting Sarita and the children of our project:

Imagine Yourself  standing in this sudden ocean …

They are not going to celebrate Diwali/Ramadan this year…

There is nothing like … Nothing will change …

Bihar - Kosi River

More than one million people have been cut off by floods in northern India from the end of August. AMURT & AMURTEL volunteers rushed to the affected area immediately and have been working out several relief camps covering the districts of Madhepura, Saharsa, Araria, Purnea, Katihar Bhagalpur and surrounding areas. The teams have distributed food and non-food items to more than 10,000 people daily and  provide medical care to the most vulnerable.

Bihar - Kosi River

Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT and AMURTEL) starting from 20th August is operating 10 relief camps in flood affected parts of North Bihar. Especial mention need be made of the camp operating from Majhaoa, which is setting an example of extraordinary dedication & courage for rescuing victims caught in the floods in their homes in Supaul district close to the Kosi Barrage. The volunteers in this camp have, till date, rescued over few hundred victims from the remote locations . Running a boat safely is the greatest concern in this area where the water current from the breach is very heavy. It requires 5 boatmen at anytime for bowing to combat water current.A distance of 10 kilometers takes over 12 hours.
The progress of rescuing people in this remote location is disturbing for want of a motor boat. AMURT is now planning to have its own motor boat.. The other Camps are rescuing and feeding over 8000 people on a daily basis. They propose to increase the service manifold.
The entire operation in 10 camps is being guided and supervised and actively worked with the sincere efforts of 40 Sanyasins both dadas and didis and 440 volunteers. A group of 25 volunteers from Orissa have left for Purnea for joining in this service effort. 10 Sanyasins from Kolikata have reached Araria and are organizing activities in Forbisganj and western Araria.

Myanmar - Irrawaddy-Delta‏: Major Breakthrough!!!

Dada Vishvarupananda writes:

Just come back from a meeting with UNICEF. The Minister of Education himself gave his approval that we can implement for UNICEF. This is the first time in history, the MoE allows a foreign organization to work on Myanmar territory! It is generally known to be the toughest of all!

Since we now can have a long term presence in Myanmar (UNICEF would like to give us more TLS temporary learning spaces), we are going to rent tomorrow a large office space (brand new, 5 rooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen in Japanese Zen design!) for 200 USD/month just two minutes by foot from all UN offices. There we can invite representatives of  other NGOs  and save a lot of money at the same time (it is half of what we pay for our Guest House room)!

AMURT can now be mentioned in press releases and fund-raising events as officially working in Myanmar!

Myanmar - Irrawaddy-Delta‏: Good News Report - Monday, 2 June 2008

Our MASS DISTRIBUTION OF FOOD ITEMS is in full swing. The food insecurity in the Delta is continuing. In spite of regular deliveries by some organizations along the main roads, there are innumerable pockets of villages that are so remote that they never received any aid.

For food distribution, AMURT operates as a wellwisher (donor) through local individuals and community groups that we know and trust. We purchase the food items (rice, pulses, cooking oil, molasse and salt) in bulk quantities which are then rationed into family-size bags. These food packages are then passed on to our trusted local friends who do the distribution. Foreigners are still not allowed to go to the cyclone-hit delta areas.

Myanmar - Irrawaddy-Delta‏: Assessment Report

Hello, THIS JUST IN: Our negotiations with UNICEF are looking quite positive and it seems we will get funding to create 30 temporary schools using our successful design and project formulas from the Yogyakarta earthquake.

OTHER NEWS FROM THIS WEEK: Our food distribution program continues. We have now served over 2,000 families with food for a week. The villages in the delta where we worked in the last week were in the Dedaye district in the Irrawaddy Delta. On the resources site there are some photos from the village of A Kai.

We created a second team that started to do asessments on Child Friendly Spaces. These teams go village to village to identify young children, orphans, single mothers and pregnant mothers that need support. There are some pictures of those as well on the resources site photo gallery. Our main donor the German child protection agency KNH is interested to fund these efforts.

Myanmar - Irrawaddy-Delta‏: Assessments und Nahrungsverteilung

AMURT and AMURTEL volunteers have been active since the cyclone hit on May 3 doing relief work. After the initial chaos we started assessments with funds that we were able to get in right away. We found many villages completely neglected and thousands of rotting corpses everywhere.

Myanmar - Irrawaddy-Delta‏: Das Neueste von Dada Nirmalkrishnananda

Namaskar dear all,
You may have followed the News reports over the last two weeks. The working conditions are extremely difficult due to the restrictions imposed by the Burmese military government.  The International NGO community is waiting in the start holes waiting for the necessary permissions to implement their relief activities.
In spite of all these obstacles, AMURT has been able to organize massive food distributions in the affected Delta area!
